What is a Growth Factor Treatment for the face?

Growth factors are naturally occurring signalling proteins involved in communication between cells. They play roles in biological processes related to tissue maintenance, repair and the extracellular matrix, which includes structures such as collagen and elastin.

AQ Skin Solutions uses Growth Factor technology in professional skincare formulas. According to the manufacturer, AQ Recovery Serum contains selected growth factors, active ingredients and antioxidants and is intended for administration by a skincare professional.

Important: this is a standalone treatment

The treatment described on this page is the standalone Gloss & Floss Growth Factor facial. AQ Recovery is applied professionally to the skin without microneedling. If you are specifically looking for a treatment that creates controlled microchannels in the skin, please see our separate page about medical microneedling .

What skin concerns may Growth Factor Treatment suit?

This treatment is primarily focused on overall skin quality. It is not intended to change facial volume or create an immediate lifting effect. Instead, the goal is to support a fresher, smoother and more balanced-looking complexion through a professional topical treatment.

Dull or tired-looking skin

For skin that appears less luminous or lacks its usual healthy-looking glow.

Uneven skin texture

May be considered when the goal is a smoother and more refined-looking skin surface.

Fine lines

Topical growth-factor preparations have been studied in facial rejuvenation and may form part of a longer-term skin-quality plan.

Photoaged appearance

Suitable for patients who feel their skin looks uneven or stressed after cumulative sun and environmental exposure.

Skin comfort and recovery

AQ Recovery is formulated for professional skincare use with a focus on supporting the skin during periods of recovery and sensitivity.

Preventive skincare

An option for patients who want to work proactively with skin quality without injections or a more intensive resurfacing procedure.

Different skin concerns may require different treatment strategies. Pronounced pigmentation, acne scarring, inflammatory skin conditions or deeper textural changes may be better suited to another treatment. A skin analysis and consultation can help determine the most appropriate starting point.

AQ Recovery Serum – what do we use?

At Gloss & Floss we use AQ Recovery Serum from AQ Skin Solutions. AQ describes Recovery Serum as a professional formula containing selected growth factors, active ingredients and antioxidants designed to complement professional skincare procedures and the recovery period of clinical modalities.

AQ’s technology is based on conditioned media containing signalling molecules such as growth factors and cytokines. This should not be confused with PRP, exosome treatments or treatments involving living stem cells; these are different technologies.

You can read the manufacturer’s product information for AQ Recovery Serum at AQ Skin Solutions . AQ describes Recovery Serum as a professional formula containing selected growth factors, active ingredients and antioxidants intended for administration by skincare professionals.

Growth Factors are not fillers, botulinum toxin or PRP

Growth Factor Treatment focuses on skin quality and should not be confused with treatments designed to change facial volume or muscle activity.

  • Not a filler: no volume is added.
  • Not botulinum toxin: muscle activity is not reduced.
  • Not PRP: no blood sample or blood-derived preparation is used.
  • No microneedling in this service: no microchannels are created.

How AQ explains its Growth Factor Technology

This educational video from AQ Skin Solutions provides background information about the company’s Growth Factor Technology and its approach to growth-factor-based skincare.

About this video: “AQ Skin Solutions Growth Factor Technology” is an educational presentation from AQ Skin Solutions. It provides background on the technology and should not be interpreted as an exact demonstration of the individual treatment protocol used at Gloss & Floss. Watch the video directly on YouTube .

What does research say about topical Growth Factors?

The most useful overview for understanding the evidence is a systematic review published in 2023. It included 33 studies with 1,180 participants and 23 different topical growth-factor preparations. Nine studies were randomized controlled trials and 24 were uncontrolled case series.

What was reported Investigator assessments generally found modest improvements in areas such as skin texture, fine lines/wrinkles and overall facial appearance compared with baseline.
Important limitations The studies used different products, growth-factor sources, combinations, additional ingredients and outcome measures. Three comparative randomized trials found no statistically significant difference between treatments.
What remains uncertain The review does not establish the effect of the exact standalone, needle-free AQ Recovery protocol used at Gloss & Floss, and persistence of improvement beyond six months remains uncertain.

How we interpret the evidence at Gloss & Floss

The literature suggests that topical growth-factor preparations may have a role in facial skin rejuvenation, but the evidence is heterogeneous and cannot be transferred directly to every product, protocol or patient. We therefore do not promise a specific result and do not present the systematic review as proof of the exact AQ Recovery treatment protocol used at our clinic.

Growth Factor Treatment vs Microneedling, Skin Booster and Chemical Peel

These treatments work in different ways. The most appropriate option depends on your starting point, treatment goals and how much downtime you are comfortable with.

Treatment How it is performed Common focus Needles? Typical downtime
Growth Factor Treatment Professional topical AQ Recovery treatment Skin quality, luminosity, texture and recovery No Usually minimal
Medical Microneedling Controlled microchannels are created in the skin Texture, pores, selected scars and collagen stimulation Yes, microneedles Temporary redness is common
Skin Booster Injectable treatment within the skin Hydration, elasticity and skin quality Yes Temporary swelling or small bruises may occur
Chemical Peel Controlled application of selected acids Tone, surface texture, luminosity and selected pigmentation concerns No Depends on peel strength

Not sure which treatment is right for your skin?

Start with a skin analysis and consultation . This allows us to compare treatment options based on your actual skin condition rather than choosing a treatment only by name.

When might you notice a change?

Skin response varies between individuals. Some patients may notice that their skin feels softer, more comfortable or appears more luminous relatively early, while other changes may develop more gradually.

Growth Factor Treatment should therefore be viewed primarily as a skin-quality treatment, rather than a procedure designed to create an immediate structural change such as filler.

The number of treatments is individualized. For some patients, a single treatment may be appropriate. Others may benefit from a planned series or from using different treatments at separate stages of a wider skincare plan.

Aftercare after Growth Factor Treatment

Because this service is standalone and needle-free, recovery is generally limited. Skin sensitivity can nevertheless vary from person to person.

  • Use gentle, well-tolerated skincare after treatment.
  • Use daily sun protection as recommended.
  • Avoid layering several strong active skincare products immediately after treatment.
  • If your skin feels sensitive, retinoids, strong acids or other potentially irritating actives may need to be paused temporarily.
  • Follow the individual aftercare advice provided at your appointment.

When should treatment be postponed or assessed more carefully?

Please tell us about current skin problems, allergies, medications and recent aesthetic procedures before treatment.

  • Active skin infection or active herpes outbreak
  • Open wounds or significantly compromised skin barrier
  • Active eczema, dermatitis or marked skin irritation
  • Sunburn
  • Known sensitivity to product ingredients
  • Ongoing medical treatment or another situation in which skin response needs to be assessed individually

Frequently asked questions about Growth Factor Treatment

What is a Growth Factor facial treatment?
It is a professional topical skincare treatment using a formulation containing growth factors and other skincare ingredients. At Gloss & Floss we use AQ Recovery Serum.
What are growth factors in skincare?
Growth factors are signalling proteins involved in communication between cells. Topical skincare formulations containing growth factors have been studied for facial rejuvenation and skin-quality improvement.
Is Growth Factor Treatment the same as microneedling?
No. The Gloss & Floss Growth Factor facial described on this page is a standalone, needle-free treatment. Microneedling is a separate procedure that creates controlled microchannels in the skin.
What is AQ Recovery Serum?
AQ Recovery Serum is a professional formula from AQ Skin Solutions. According to the manufacturer, it contains selected growth factors, active ingredients and antioxidants and is intended for administration by a skincare professional.
Are growth factors the same as stem cells?
No. Growth factors are signalling proteins. A Growth Factor facial is not the same as treatment with living stem cells.
Are growth factors the same as exosomes?
No. Growth factors are signalling proteins, while exosomes are small extracellular vesicles that can carry different biological signalling molecules. This service uses AQ Recovery and is not an exosome treatment.
What is the difference between Growth Factors and PRP?
PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood and contains platelet-related growth factors. The Gloss & Floss Growth Factor Treatment instead uses a professionally formulated AQ serum and does not require a blood sample.
Growth Factor Treatment or Skin Booster – what is the difference?
Growth Factor Treatment is a topical, needle-free facial focused on skin quality. A Skin Booster is an injectable treatment generally used to improve hydration, elasticity and skin quality from within the skin.
Does Growth Factor Treatment hurt?
The treatment is needle-free and is generally designed to be gentle. Individual sensitivity varies, and temporary warmth, tingling or mild irritation may occur in sensitive skin.
Is there downtime?
Because this treatment does not include microneedling or injections, downtime is usually minimal. Temporary redness or sensitivity may occur.
When can I expect to notice changes?
Response varies from person to person. Some patients notice earlier changes in skin softness or luminosity, while other changes may develop more gradually. We do not promise a fixed result or timeline.
How many Growth Factor treatments might I need?
There is no single treatment number that suits everyone. Some patients may choose an individual treatment, while others may be advised to follow a planned series depending on skin condition, response and treatment goals.
Can Growth Factor Treatment help with fine lines?
Yes, topical growth-factor preparations have been studied in facial rejuvenation. The 2023 systematic review reported modest investigator-assessed improvements in fine lines/wrinkles and skin texture across heterogeneous studies. These findings do not establish a specific result for the exact standalone AQ Recovery protocol used at Gloss & Floss.
Can Growth Factor Treatment help acne scars or enlarged pores?
For more pronounced acne scarring or textural irregularity, medical microneedling or another treatment may be more appropriate. We recommend choosing the treatment after assessment rather than assuming one method is suitable for every type of scar or pore concern.
Can Growth Factor Treatment be combined with other treatments?
Yes. A wider skincare plan may include separate treatments such as microneedling, Skin Booster or chemical peeling at different times. The combination and timing should be individualized.
How much does Growth Factor Treatment cost in Stockholm?
The current Gloss & Floss price for Growth Factor Treatment for the face is 3,095 SEK. Current prices are also available on our medical aesthetics price page .
Where is the treatment performed?
