Can you eat and drink with Invisalign?
Short answer
You should remove Invisalign aligners before eating and before drinking anything except water. Eating with aligners can damage, stain or distort them, and food can become trapped against the teeth. Water is usually fine while wearing aligners. After meals or drinks, clean your teeth or at least rinse carefully before putting the aligners back in.
Why Invisalign eating rules matter
Invisalign aligners are removable, which is one of their main advantages. You can take them out for meals, brush and floss normally, and avoid many of the food restrictions linked to fixed braces.
However, because aligners cover the teeth for many hours each day, food, sugar and acidic drinks trapped under them can increase the risk of stains, bad breath, enamel irritation, cavities and gum inflammation. Good routines are therefore an important part of successful treatment.
What can you eat with Invisalign?
You should not eat while the aligners are in your mouth. Remove them before meals and snacks, store them safely in their case, and put them back in after cleaning your teeth or rinsing when brushing is not possible.
Once the aligners are removed, you can usually eat normally unless your dentist has given specific instructions. If your teeth feel sore after changing aligners, softer foods may feel more comfortable for a day or two.
Drinks and Invisalign: what is safe?
| Drink | With aligners in? | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Usually yes | Plain water is generally the safest drink while wearing aligners. |
| Coffee or tea | No | Can stain aligners and may warp them if very hot. |
| Soft drinks | No | Sugar and acidity can become trapped under aligners and increase cavity risk. |
| Juice or smoothies | No | Can contain sugar and acids that should not stay against teeth under aligners. |
| Wine or coloured drinks | No | Can stain aligners and teeth, especially if aligners are worn over residues. |
| Hot drinks | No | Heat may distort the plastic and affect aligner fit. |
What happens if you eat with aligners?
- The aligner may crack, bend or lose its fit
- Food particles can become trapped against the teeth
- The aligners can stain or develop odour
- The teeth may be exposed to sugar and acid for longer
- Attachments can feel more difficult to clean
- Tracking may be affected if aligners become distorted
What happens at Gloss & Floss?
At Gloss & Floss Dental Care® in Södermalm, Stockholm, Invisalign patients receive practical instructions on how to use, remove, clean and store aligners during daily life. We explain how eating and drinking routines affect treatment tracking, oral hygiene and cavity prevention.
For English-speaking patients, we make the everyday details clear: when to remove aligners, how to clean before reinserting them, what to do at work or restaurants, and when to contact the clinic if an aligner becomes damaged or no longer fits properly.
Daily routine with Invisalign
- Remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except water.
- Place aligners in the case, not in a napkin or pocket.
- Eat and drink normally while the aligners are out.
- Brush and floss before reinserting aligners when possible.
- If brushing is not possible, rinse your mouth and clean properly as soon as you can.
- Put aligners back in promptly so wear time stays on track.
How to protect teeth during treatment
- Keep meals and snacks organised so aligner wear time is not reduced too much
- Avoid sipping sugary or acidic drinks over long periods
- Carry a travel toothbrush or rinsing routine when away from home
- Clean aligners daily according to your dentist’s instructions
- Do not use very hot water on aligners
- Attend follow-up visits so fit, tracking and hygiene can be checked
- Contact the clinic if aligners become stained, cracked, loose or distorted
What if you cannot brush after every meal?
Brushing before reinserting aligners is ideal, but real life is not always perfect. If you cannot brush immediately, rinse your mouth well with water and put the aligners back in to avoid losing too much wear time. Brush and floss properly as soon as possible.
If you often snack or drink coffee throughout the day, discuss this with your dentist. Small habits can affect both treatment progress and oral health during Invisalign.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drink water with Invisalign?
Yes. Plain water is usually fine while wearing Invisalign aligners.
Can I drink coffee with Invisalign?
It is better to remove the aligners before drinking coffee. Coffee can stain aligners and hot drinks may affect the plastic fit.
Can I chew gum with Invisalign?
No. Chewing gum can stick to aligners and damage or distort them. Remove aligners before chewing gum, and remember that frequent gum chewing may reduce wear time.
Can I eat a quick snack with aligners in?
No. Even a small snack can damage aligners or trap food against teeth. Remove them first and store them in the case.
What happens if I forget and eat with aligners once?
Clean the aligners and your teeth carefully, then check whether the aligners still fit properly. Contact your dentist if they are cracked, warped or no longer seat correctly.
Can Invisalign cause cavities?
Invisalign itself does not cause cavities, but poor cleaning, sugary drinks, frequent snacking or wearing aligners over food and plaque can increase cavity risk.
